Visiting the Sick and Concept of Reiki in Islam

??????????????????????????????

Islam invites us all to good and warns us from all that is bad. Visiting the sick is one of those good and virtuous deeds. When people visit each other in good health, bonds of brotherhood and friendship are made. However when people visit each other in times of sickness and poor or failing health, this bond is even more strengthened.  Illustrating the empathy that Muslims are required to feel for each other, Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said:

“The parable of the Believers in their mutual love and mercy is like that of a living body, if one part feels pain, the whole body suffers in sleeplessness and fever.”

[Saheeh Muslim]

It does not only show love, care and empathy for our brother or sister but it is a major responsibility that every single Muslim is duty-bound to fulfill. The Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said:

“The rights of one Muslim over another Muslim are six. When you meet him, you greet him with the salaam (i.e. to say: “As-Salamu  alaykum”), when he invites you, you accept his invitation, when he consults you in a matter, you give him sincere advice, when he sneezes and praises God, you ask God to have mercy on him, when he is sick, you visit him, and when he passes away you accompany him (through his funeral).”

[Related by Abu Hurayra in Saheeh Bukhari]

Not only the Hadiths but how these Hadiths were practiced by our beloved prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) open doors of wisdom for us. Hazrat A’isha R.A, the Wife of the Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam), narrated:

“If someone fell sick, the Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) would pass his right hand over them while saying the following prayer: ‘O Lord of humanity!,  take away the suffering, bring the recovery, there is no cure but Your cure that leaves no illness.’”

[Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim]

My mother told me that placing the hand (palm) over the forehead of a sick person, enables the healthy energy, from the body of a healthy person, to travel into the body of the sick and helps him to recover soon. While searching on the topic, I found that it is a part of Reiki hand placements technique for treating others. Reiki is based on the concept of ‘life force energy”. When this life force energy is low, we are more likely to get sick and we are happy and healthy when this life force energy is high. We should thank Allah every second for blessing us with a religion this scientific and thank Him for blessing us with Mohammad (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) Whose Life was nothing but a complete guidance and tutorial for us.

“Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example to follow for whoever hopes for [the meeting of] Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.”

[Quran 33:21]
